Would you like to help save the planet?
You can, with the help of thrive and “Planet Savers”.
We are a Young Enterprise Company called thrive, set up in September 2007. thrive consists of nine company members and are based at Queen Elizabeth’s High School, Gainsborough.
We are “aiming to facilitate a positive ecological change” in our local area, and you can help to achieve this.
“Planet Savers” are trees which we plant in order to offset carbon emissions. Trees do this through the natural process of photosynthesis; they absorb the carbon you emit from the atmosphere through their leaves and this generates food for them. Each year we individually emit 2.51 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, but it is easy to offset this. By planting x number of trees you will have offset your annual carbon emissions. If we all did this, we would all live in a cleaner, greener world and we would leave a cleaner, greener world for future generations.
Heinrich Tikkanen, a Finnish author once said, “Because we don’t think about our future generations, they will never forget us”. Let’s not let this happen, we all can do our bit to save the planet.
This quote made thrive immediately think about children and education. As part of the Key Stage 2 Science syllabus, children have to study the life of plants and trees and the optimum conditions for growth. Furthermore under the Government’s “Education for Sustainable Development”, schools in England are required to “develop pupil’s awareness, understanding of and respect for the environment in which they live, and secure their commitment to sustainable development at a personal, local, national and global level.” Recognising this, thrive came up with the idea of “eco-learn” a fully interactive, educational CD-ROM package that allows children to engage with and learn about the environment.
“eco-learn” includes
Included in the “eco-learn” package is an “eco-learn” CD-ROM, a certificate recognising your achievement and a tree of your choice to plant in your garden or school grounds.
We want to make a difference in our local area and we hope you do too. Please visit our website
